Bavarian Barbarian – Concert/Beer Tasting

BB_axeCourtesy of pcmsconcerts.org:

Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert… it doesn’t take much more than a quick scan of our programs to see why Germany and Austria are considered the cradle of classical music.  But these countries are responsible for another of life’s great cultivated pleasures:  BEER.  Isn’t it about time these two great regional accomplishments were brought together?

If you love a good pilsner as much as a great pizzicato, I have good news for you.  We’ve teamed up with Bavarian Barbarian Brewing Company — one of Pennsylvania’s newest and best craft breweries — for a joint concert/beer tasting on Tuesday, February 23 at the Philosophical Society.  Come out and hear the outstanding Grammy-nominated violinist Jennifer Koh perform Mozart and Schubert, and enjoy a sampling of Bavarian Barbarian’s classic Euro-inspired ales at intermission!

If you can’t wait until February to try Bavarian Barbarian’s brews, Brahaus Schmitz on South Street is currently pouring their delicious brown ale, and you can always find them at Bavarian Barbarian headquarters in Williamsport.  Bottoms up!

BavarianBarbarianLogoFrom Mike:

Cleaning day for the brewery. Getting the brewhouse all set to brew the First Snow Ale Winter Warmer on Tuesday. Cinnamon, allspice, ginger and nutmeg are pleasantly waiting for the kettle. First Snow Ale was a huge hit last year, so we're releasing it much earlier this year for our most eager fans. Should be ready... ...in time for Thanksgiving. Can't wait to drink this with all the Thanksgiving desserts! Hoo-wee!

Bavarian Barbarian – Our help…

BavarianBarbarianLogoI’ve watched as Mike Hiller and his wife Kira have lived the “dream” of most beer lovers and all home brewers.  Mike turned a hobby of home brewing into a full-time job and opened Bavarian Barbarian.  This is no small feat and certainly one of personal and financial risk, but Mike followed what he loved and opened BB.  Now word comes that despite his best efforts, despite wonderful bottle sales and despite overall sales being up, Bavarian Barbarian is struggling financially.

I write this in the present tense because we should be thinking that way.  All too often we react late and we support something we love only after it is gone.  There have been many casualties in this economy, and I write this in the name of Bavarian Barbarian NOT becoming another one of them.

As beer lovers we are a community and a community should support our friends and our beer family.  As Mike & Kira continue to fight and struggle to keep BB alive, I simply ask that you, as beer lovers, join the fight with them.  Please stop by and pick up some Bavarian Barbarian bottles or growlers, attend BB events, pick up some BB swag and do as I do right now and ask our local beer bars and mybeerbuzz members to seek out BB to run on tap.  Cheers to Mike & Kira…fight the good fight.

Bavarian Barbarian – Woof! DogBites Are Here

From Kira:

WILLIAMSPORT, PA – The Bavarian Barbarian Brewing Company is excited to announce the release of Barbarian Dogbites. Dogbites are dog treats shaped like battle axes, made with spent grain - a by-product of the brewing process. The treats come in three varieties - Peanut Butter, Chicken and Beef. The Black Dog Bakery makes the treats, which are available in 8oz bags at both the brewery and the Williamsport Grower’s Market.

The idea to make dog treats from the spent grain was actually inspired by Luke, the “Barbarian” dog. “As we are a two-person operation, our beagle, Luke, often visits the brewery,” owner, Kira Gay Hiller explains. “On brewing days we noticed that Luke would make a beeline to any spent grain that had fallen on the floor and start munching.” Knowing that many breweries use spent grain to make bread, Kira checked the internet and found a simple dog treat recipe. She made several batches, which were shared with friends and family. “Everyone loved them, even the “picky” dogs. Someone even asked if they could pay me to make more. While making dog treats sounded like a great idea, I just couldn’t find the time.”

Then Kira’s husband, Mike, stopped at the Williamsport Grower’s Market one Saturday and met Todd and Milissa Hiller of the Black Dog Bakery. Knowing that Luke had “tested and approved” their dog treats before, Mike asked them if they would be interested in making dog treats and they agreed. A few sample batches later and a new partnership was born.
“The best part is that, like us, the Black Dog Bakery is comprised of a husband-wife team,” said Mike Hiller, “and they are only a year older then us.” “Plus, they have improved on Kira’s original recipe - I’m tempted to eat them myself.”

The Black Dog Bakery, located in Loganton, opened April of 2006. Each biscuit is hand rolled, cut and baked in owner, Milissa Hiller’s, kitchen. The bakery is fully licensed and registered with the PA Dept. of Agriculture. All Commercial Feed License Laws are followed and all of their products are laboratory tested. No sugar or preservatives are added to any of the recipes. For more information on the Black Dog Bakery, visit their website at www.bdbakery.com or call 570-725-2167

Bavarian Barbarian - Hard Times Farmhouse Ale

From Kira:

WILLIAMSPORT, PA - The Bavarian Barbarian Brewing Company is pleased to announce the release of a new summer special: HARD TIMES BELGIAN FARMHOUSE ALE.

This newest creation is a unique interpretation of a classic Saison.  Up front, there are peppery and citrusy notes that slowly give way to more sublime spice and fruit characters.  Refreshing and somewhat dry, the mélange of spices, especially the addition of sassafras root, give HARD TIMES a very complex profile.

HARD TIMES ALE is a reflection of the tough economic times we all face.  Inspired by our own limited funds, the grain was put together from leftover malts from previous recipes, the yeast was borrowed from the Bullfrog Brewery and spices were procured from Williamsport's Freshlife Market.

Barbarian Nation Expands to the Middle East

Here's a great press release from Mike & Kira from Bavarian Barbarian:

Local brewery makes connections with Barbarians in Iraq

WILLIAMSPORT, PA – Local brewery Bavarian Barbarian Brewing Company has expanded the Barbarian Nation to include Marines serving in Iraq. In July, Major Kevin “Chet” Heartwell, a pilot in the 367th Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron, was skimming the internet looking for a battle axe as a going-away gift for one of his squadron mates and found Bavarian Barbarian Brewing Company’s website. Maj. Heartwell was intrigued by the local brewery because his squadron’s radio call sign is “Barbarian.”

An email was sent to the Bavarian Barbarian by Maj. Heartwell, requesting an olive-drab colored t-shirt bearing the brewery’s battle axe logo. Quick to accommodate, the brewery sent t-shirts, hats and bumper stickers bearing the battle axe logo to Maj. Heartwell, stationed in Baghdad.
According to Maj. Heartwell, “The stickers were a big hit. The Marines thought they were pretty cool and we starting to see them show up in different areas of the squadron.”

After it was suggested by the brewery to place the bumper stickers on his helicopter, Maj. Heartwell responded, “we don’t have bumpers on our aircraft, not many traffic jams at 3000 feet, but let me see what I can do.”

In return, Maj. Heartwell sent a U.S. flag flown in his helicopter during a five-hour mission over Baghdad to the Bavarian Barbarian where the flag now hangs prominently in the brewery. Accompanying the flag was a certificate authenticating the flag’s origin and decals bearing the squadron’s logo. Photographs of squadron members wearing the brewery’s t-shirts were also emailed.

Soon after the first t-shirts arrived in Baghdad, the Barbarian Squadron’s commander, Lieutenant Colonel James Adams emailed the Bavarian Barbarian requesting more t-shirts. The brewery responded and mailed out t-shirts to Lt. Col. Adams along with packages of Halloween candy on Halloween day.

On Christmas Eve, the Bavarian Barbarian received an email from Lt. Col. Adams reporting that his package had finally arrived. However, the package had to catch up with the Barbarian Squadron at their base in California. Lt. Col. Adams was happy to report that the Barbarian Squadron had arrived back in the U.S. just in time for Thanksgiving. He was even happier to report, “we brought everyone home that we took to Iraq.”
